Ethernet-APL Introduction to Ethernet-APL Business Outcomes

Ethernet-APL, the new advanced physical layer (APL) standard for Ethernet, is the future of process automation to enable end user and device vendor business outcomes for plant aspects such as instrumentation, infrastructure and DCS.

Ethernet-APL Overview and End to End Use Case

Ethernet-APL is the new advanced physical layer Ethernet standard that enables Ethernet in the field within process plants. It is Single Pair Ethernet communication with power on a two-wire, type A cable and integrated intrinsically safe explosion protection. This combination of attributes satisfies the requirements of long reach cabling with up to 1,000 meters length and simplified verification of hazardous area protection for any zones and divisions. Ethernet-APL will enable the movement of process data and information from the instrumentation to on-premise and cloud applications to support modern IIoT and Industry 4.0 solutions. Join this talk to get an overview how Ethernet-APL will allow companies to reduce total cost of ownership by optimizing field assets using a single and seamless network technology.

Ethernet-APL Planning Your First Ethernet-APL Project

Ethernet-APL promises to revolutionize the communication between field instruments in potentially explosive / hazardous environments. Whether you are upgrading an existing (brownfield) or planning a new (greenfield) application, Ethernet-APL requires an overview of the terms and philosophy of this unique Ethernet-based communication method. With a shielded, twisted single pair copper cable designed to reach 1000 meters that will provide access to data from field devices at 10 Mbit/s and the ability to use both star and trunk/spur configurations, you will be able to set up your first Ethernet-APL project in an optimal manner. Whether you are designing a skid or modular package, or require the longest possible distance for your application, we will discuss the basis of the Ethernet-APL standard and what to expect from the founding members of the APL Project.

Ethernet-APL Infrastructure and Explosive Atmospheres

Ethernet-APL is ready to be used as the next standard for field applications, including installations in hazardous areas. It has been developed based on the requirements from end user organizations like NAMUR. Besides key features like 10 Mbit/sec. communication bandwidth, two-wire cabling with power for field devices, one of the major advantages is “easy to use”. Ethernet-APL supports various explosion protection techniques and can be used with different field devices in hazardous areas. However, intrinsic safety is one of the most favorable types of protection when it comes to process automation. Intrinsically safe devices are easy to handle —installation, modifications or maintenance can be completed easily. The new 2-WISE explosion protection (2-Wire Intrinsically Safe Ethernet) for Ethernet-APL enables the use of field devices up to Zone 0 as well as DIV 1. Using standardized Ex i safety parameters, Ethernet-APL devices from different manufacturers can be interconnected within the framework of the specified boundary conditions of Ethernet-APL or 2-WISE without calculatory verification of intrinsic safety and without taking cable parameters into account.

Ethernet-APL Engineering

Ethernet APL is the emerging standard for 2-wire-Ethernet in the Process industry. Ethernet APL delivers energy and data to sensors and actors. Also, in areas with explosive atmosphere. Key for the efficient usage of this new technology is a description, how to plan such networks. This information is provided by the Ethernet-APL Engineering Guideline, covered by this presentation. The presentation gives an overview about planning, installation and acceptance test of Ethernet APL networks.
